Origins

A brief history of HUMAN-KIND : by Kyrah Ashe

The Origins of HUMAN-KIND

Workwear for humans - made in a kind way.

HUMAN-KIND WORKWEAR was born at the intersection of experience and evolution - a culmination of a multi-chapter journey across the fashion and lifestyle landscape of South Africa.

Over the past decade, I’ve founded and grown several well-loved South African brands - from kidswear and womenswear to home linens and skincare. Each one was created with deep care, strong creative identity, and a desire to offer something meaningful. After selling those brands, I felt the quiet pull to focus on something more grounded, more essential: clothing that supports how we live and work, day to day.

That led to GREENS - SA's FIRST online store for customisable scrubs. A brand that has since grown into Africa’s largest range of scrub styles. From that foundation, it became clear: the need for thoughtful, beautiful workwear extends far beyond healthcare.

We now stand at the edge of our next chapter - a dedicated offering for workwear across multiple industries.

This is where HUMAN-KIND WORKWEAR begins.

HUMAN-KIND is not just a label. It’s a philosophy - Workwear for humans, made in a kind way.

We design elevated, purpose-driven uniforms that honour the people who wear them AND the people who make them. With an unwavering commitment to ethical production, we craft every piece with respect, softness, and precision.

Our garments are durable, elegant, and rooted in simplicity. Not overdesigned. Never rushed. Built to serve and to last.

KYHA Collection

Where HUMAN-KIND is tailored for the world outside, KYHA is a tribute to the world within. A soft, relaxed collection of garments for home and off-duty life.

Named as a play on my own name Kyrah and the Zulu word khaya - meaning home.

KYHA is the quiet counterpart to our structured workwear - the yin of home wear to the yang of workwear.

A Life by the Sea, A Life in Motion

I've moved through both shadows and light. I've wept in the dead of the night and I have breathed in the warmth of the morning sun. The rhythms of life continue to ebb and flow - gentler now, more rooted, steady, and whole.

I am finding my way in this world. Not through noise or urgency, but through stillness. Through creating with intention, parenting with presence, and building brands that reflect the life I want to live - slower, kinder, more conscious and getting better at what we do every single day.

Each chapter - the successes, the pauses, the heartache and pivots - has led me here:

To this season of finding clarity.
To designing not just clothing, but a way of being in the world that feels aligned, soft and strong all at once.

Today, I live on the island of Mauritius with my four children and a human who I love. We live slower by the sea, under the sun, grounded by nature and the simplicity of island life. It’s here, in this rhythm, that I continue to design and create - drawing inspiration from stillness, salt air, and the way children move through the world without effort or expectation. It's one beautiful life of love, daily monotonies, wiping away tears and putting plasters on grazed knees, cleaning up, surfing, cooking, laughing and stargazing.

While I now manage our South African production remotely, our commitment to supporting local manufacturing and jobs has never been stronger. Every piece is proudly made in South Africa, with ethical partnerships and sustainable practices at the core of our process.

Looking Forward - Expanding to the Islands

From Mauritius, we’re excited to expand our offering to the Indian Ocean islands - bringing HUMAN-KINDS ethos of kindness, function, and style to more communities, climates, and cultures.

As part of this expansion, I’m also preparing to launch SEA LA VIE - a sustainable swimwear brand that carries the same DNA as Greens, HUMAN-KIND and KYHA : conscious, minimal, and made to last. Inspired by life on the coastline, Sea La Vie will offer timeless swim essentials designed for women who live fully and lightly - in the water and in the world.

HUMAN-KIND is a reflection of a life lived intentionally - as a mother, a maker, a minimalist, and a steward of thoughtful design.

I commit to cultivating brands that believe in clothing as care - for the self, for others, and for the planet.

With thoughtfulness, with love, Kyrah x
